Roger II and the creation of the Kingdom of Sicily

by: Graham Loud
This student-friendly volume brings together English translations of the main narrative sources, and a small number of other relevant documents, for the reign of Roger II, the founder of the kingdom of Sicily.

The kingdom created by King Roger was the most centralised and administratively advanced of the time, but its genesis was fraught with difficulty as the king sought to extend his power from the island of Sicily and Calabria into other parts of the south Italian mainland. This struggle, that lasted from 1127 until 1140, is graphically revealed by the two main texts in this book.

Frederick, Conrad and Manfred of Hohenstaufen, Kings of Sicily: The Chronicle of Nicholas of Jamsilla 1210-1258

by: Louis Mendola

In the decade following the death of Frederick II in 1250, his sons Conrad and Manfred had to defend the Kingdom of Sicily against covetous popes and traitorous barons. This is the only contemporary chronicle to recount these events from the point of view of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and their Ghibelline supporters. Here is the first English translation of the chronicle written in Latin at the traveling court of Manfred Hohenstaufen. Its publication in English is a milestone in the study of a key period in Italian and German history.

Roger of Sicily: and the Normans in Lower Italy

by: Edmund Curtis
In 1016, the ruthlessly ambitious, but obscure, knights of the Norman House of Hauteville came to southern Italy and managed to create a kingdom of their own. Under its first king, Roger II, the Kingdom of Sicily, which included southern Italy, became the most cosmopolitan, tolerant, and enlightened state in Medieval Europe, where Muslims, Christians, Greeks, Normans, Lombards, Italians, Arabs, and Jews lived in relative harmony. By virtue of its strategic location and powerful navy it was at the center of the Mediterranean world.

The Kingdom of Sicily 1130-1860

by: Louis Mendola

Covering seven eventful centuries, this is the first complete history of the Kingdom of Sicily ever published.

The lively narrative traces the history of Sicily from the foundation of its multicultural kingdom under the Normans in the twelfth century to the end of its baroque monarchy in the nineteenth, with framing chapters covering the periods before and afterward. Here, in a text dripping with eloquence, passion and fact after fact, a leading historian tells the complex yet fascinating story of the world's most conquered, most contested island.
